Sedation Dentistry Sydney CBD
Dental anxiety
doesn't have to win.

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons Australians avoid necessary dental treatment — with real consequences for their long-term oral and general health. At Horizon Dental, we take dental anxiety seriously and offer three levels of sedation to ensure every patient can receive the care they need, completely comfortably.

Whether you experience mild nerves, a strong gag reflex, or a severe phobia that has prevented you from attending a dentist for years, we have a sedation option calibrated to your specific situation. The most important step is a conversation — our pre- sedation consultation is completely pressure-free.

You are never judged for your anxiety

We understand that dental anxiety can feel embarrassing or irrational. At Horizon Dental, we take an entirely non-judgmental approach. Many of our most grateful patients are those who hadn’t been to a dentist in years because of fear — and who now attend regularly.

Who Sedation Is For
You might benefit from
sedation if you experience…
01
Fear of needles or instruments

The sight of dental instruments, needles, or drills triggers anxiety that makes appointments feel impossible to attend.

02
Previous traumatic experience

A bad dental experience in childhood or adulthood has created a lasting association between dentistry and fear or pain.

03
Difficulty numbing effectively
Some patients require higher doses of local anaesthetic or find it doesn't work reliably — sedation removes the risk of awareness.
04
Strong gag reflex

An overactive gag reflex makes some dental procedures very difficult to complete comfortably without sedation assistance.

05
General dental phobia

A deep-seated fear of the dental environment, sounds, smells, or loss of control that has prevented regular dental care for years.

06
Complex or lengthy treatment

Patients needing multiple procedures, implants, or extensive restorations choose sedation to complete more work in fewer appointments.

Our Sedation Options
Three levels of sedation.
One right option for you.
Nitrous Oxide

Inhaled through a nose mask, nitrous oxide takes effect in minutes and wears off completely within 5–10 minutes of removal. You remain fully conscious and can drive home after.

Conscious throughout
Wears off in 5–10 min
Drive home after
Best for: Mild to moderate anxiety, short procedures
01
Sleep Dentistry

Oral sedation or light IV sedation produces a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state. You remain technically conscious but are profoundly relaxed and will remember little or nothing of the appointment.

Deeply relaxed state
Little to no memory
Escort required home
Best for: Moderate to severe anxiety, multiple treatments
02
IV Sedation

Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation produces the deepest conscious sedation available outside a hospital. Onset is immediate, depth is precisely controlled, and most patients recall nothing.

Immediate, precise control
Virtually no memory
Escort required home
Best for: Severe anxiety, complex or lengthy treatment

Common Questions
Sedation dentistry
questions answered.

Your questions about sedation deserve honest, clear answers. Here are the ones we hear most often.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes — when administered by a trained and experienced provider. At Horizon Dental, all sedation is administered by Dr Kozor with appropriate monitoring throughout. Your blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and heart rate are monitored continuously. Sedation dentistry has an outstanding safety record when conducted by qualified practitioners.

No. Sedation reduces anxiety and awareness, but local anaesthetic is still administered to ensure complete pain-free treatment. IV and oral sedation patients frequently report no memory of the procedure at all — they simply drift off and wake up with their treatment done.

This depends on the type of sedation. Nitrous oxide requires no fasting. Oral sedation and IV sedation require fasting — usually no food for 6 hours and no clear liquids for 2 hours before your appointment. We provide full written instructions at your pre-sedation consultation.

Nitrous oxide is typically $80–$150 per appointment. Oral sedation is $150–$350. IV sedation ranges from $400–$800 per session depending on duration. We provide a full cost estimate at consultation. Health fund rebates may apply to components of sedation treatment.

You can drive after nitrous oxide — the gas clears from your system within 5–10 minutes. For oral sedation and IV sedation, you must have a responsible adult escort you home and stay with you for several hours. These forms of sedation significantly impair driving ability.
