Porcelain vs Composite Veneers:
the complete guide.

Both transform your smile. One is permanent and premium; the other is same-day and reversible. Understanding the real differences in material, longevity, cost, and process helps you make a decision you’re completely confident in.

The Decision Guide
Same outcome.
Different journey to get there.

Porcelain and composite veneers both transform your smile — but through different materials, processes, and timeframes. The right choice depends on your goals, budget, how long you want the result to last, and how much of your natural tooth structure you want to preserve. Here is everything you need to make an informed decision.

Porcelain Veneers
Crafted in ceramic.
Designed to last decades.

Ultra-thin ceramic shells fabricated by a dental technician or CEREC milling unit and bonded to the front surface of the tooth. The gold standard for cosmetic dentistry — unmatched translucency, exceptional stain resistance, and a lifespan of 15–20+ years.

Composite Veneers
Sculpted chairside.
Completed the same day.

Tooth-coloured resin applied directly to the tooth surface and sculpted, cured, and polished in a single appointment. No laboratory, no temporary veneers, no second visit. Typically no enamel removal — the procedure is fully reversible.

Detailed Comparison
Porcelain vs Composite:
the full comparison.

Porcelain veneers: fired ceramic produces the most lifelike translucency of any restorative material.

Porcelain Veneers — In Detail
The premium
choice for lasting results.

Porcelain veneers are the gold standard of cosmetic dentistry for good reason. The fired ceramic material achieves a translucency and light-interaction that is virtually identical to natural enamel — in experienced hands, the result is simply indistinguishable from natural teeth.

The process requires two appointments: a preparation appointment (where a
minimal amount of enamel is removed and a digital scan or impression taken), a period of 1–2 weeks while the veneers are fabricated, and a fitting appointment where the permanent veneers are bonded. At Horizon Dental, CEREC same-day porcelain veneers are also available for patients wanting the result in a single visit.

Advantages
Limitations
CEREC same-day porcelain veneers at Horizon Dental

Horizon Dental’s CEREC milling unit allows us to design and fabricate porcelain veneers in-clinic — which means some cases can be completed in a single, longer appointment. No temporaries, no laboratory turnaround, and the same ceramic quality as traditional lab-fabricated porcelain.

Composite Veneers — In Detail
Same-day transformation.
Maximum affordability.

Composite veneers are created chairside — Dr Kozor applies tooth-coloured resin in layers directly to the tooth surface, sculpting each to the correct shape and contour, curing with a light, and polishing to a natural finish. The entire process is completed in a single appointment with no laboratory, no temporaries, and typically no enamel removal.

In experienced hands, composite veneers produce results that are genuinely beautiful — the material quality and application technique at Horizon Dental means the finish is far removed from the flat, lifeless appearance associated with poorly
executed composite work. Modern nano-hybrid composites have excellent translucency when properly layered and polished.

Advantages
Limitations
Composite veneers as a trial run for porcelain

Many patients who are considering porcelain veneers choose composite veneers first — as a low-commitment way to experience the shape and proportion of their planned smile before committing to the permanent ceramic result. This is a clinically sound approach that Dr Kozor is experienced in planning.

Which Should You Choose?
Porcelain or composite —
the deciding factors.
Choose Porcelain Veneers if...
You want the best result that lasts.
Choose Composite Veneers if...
You want results today at a lower cost.
The most common scenario at Horizon Dental: a patient who wants porcelain veneers long-term, but starts with composite to live with the new smile shape for 6–12 months before committing to the permanent ceramic version. This is a completely valid and clinically sound approach.

Frequently asked questions from patients comparing porcelain and composite veneers at their Horizon Dental consultation.

Can you really tell the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?

A well-executed composite veneer by an experienced clinician is genuinely beautiful and difficult to distinguish from porcelain in most lighting conditions and at conversation distance. The difference is more apparent in close-up photography, under bright light, and over time as composite begins to stain and wear. For most social situations, composite veneers look excellent.

Yes — this is a very common progression. Composite veneers are placed on an unetched tooth surface with minimal or no enamel removal, which means transitioning to porcelain veneers later is entirely possible. The composite is removed and the tooth is prepared for porcelain in the normal way. Dr Kozor plans this progression from the outset if it is the patient’s intention.

Composite veneers at Horizon Dental are priced from $400–$1,200 per tooth depending on the complexity and extent of coverage. Porcelain veneers are from $1,500–$2,500 per tooth. A full upper arch composite veneer case (8 teeth) may cost $4,000–$8,000, versus $12,000–$20,000 for the same case in porcelain. We provide complete itemised estimates at consultation.

Composite resin is more porous than porcelain and does absorb stains over time from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco. Regular professional polishing at your checkup appointments helps maintain the surface. Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to staining because the ceramic surface is non-porous — this is one of the most significant material differences between the two options.
