A lost filling or fallen crown leaves your tooth exposed and vulnerable. Sharp edges, extreme sensitivity, and the risk of further fracture mean you should seek same-day care. Call Horizon Dental and we will see you today.
Filling and crown emergencies treated the same day at Horizon Dental
Protect it today.
When a filling falls out or a crown comes off, the underlying tooth is left exposed — vulnerable to temperature sensitivity, bacterial entry, further decay, and physical damage from biting forces. What was once protected tooth structure or exposed dentine is now unshielded.
Many lost fillings and crowns can be assessed and treated the same day at Horizon Dental. Temporary cement or a new filling can be placed immediately to relieve sensitivity and prevent further damage. Where a permanent ceramic crown isrequired, our CEREC in-clinic milling system can fabricate and fit it in a single
appointment — no laboratory waiting period, no second visit.
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet — Normal after a filling or crown loss — exposed dentine contains tubules leading to the nerve
- Sharp or rough tooth surface — Tooth structure or old restoration material may have left a jagged edge — avoid touching with your tongue
- Pain on biting or pressure — Indicates the tooth is structurally compromised — avoid chewing on the affected side until treated
- Crown that came off intact — An intact crown may be re-cemented — bring it to your appointment in a clean container
- Decay underneath the old restoration — Often the cause of a filling or crown failure — needs assessment and re-treatment
Dental wax (available at pharmacies) or sugar-free chewing gum can be pressed over the exposed area as a very temporary measure to reduce sensitivity. Do not use this as
a substitute for dental treatment — it will not last more than a few hours.

with their emergencies.
No need for a temporary crown and a second
appointment. Our CEREC system designs and mills a permanent ceramic crown from high-strength porcelain in your appointment.
Lost fillings and crowns often fail due to secondary decayor bite problems. We diagnose and treat the reason for failure — so the new restoration lasts.
Sensitivity from a lost filling is immediately eliminated once a new temporary or permanent filling is placed. You leave feeling better than you arrived.

Questions we hear from patients experiencing lost filling / crown. Call if yours isn’t here — we answer immediately.
Can a crown that fell off be re-cemented?
Often yes — if the crown is intact and the underlying tooth is undamaged, the crown can be cleaned and re-cemented with fresh dental cement. This is a quick, straightforward procedure. However, if the tooth has decay underneath or the crown is damaged, a new crown is usually required.
Why did my filling or crown fall out?
Common causes include: secondary decay under or around the old restoration; bite forces that stressed the restoration over time; inadequate remaining tooth structure to retain the restoration; or the restoration simply reaching the end of its lifespan. Dr Kozor will identify the cause at your appointment and plan accordingly.
How long does a new CEREC crown take?
CEREC crown fabrication and fitting typically takes 1.5–2.5 hours in a single appointment. This includes taking a digital scan, designing the crown on-screen, milling it from a ceramic block, adjusting the fit, and cementing permanently. No temporary crown, no laboratory, no second appointment.
Is it an emergency if my filling fell out but it doesn't hurt?
Yes — a same-day assessment is still recommended even without pain. Exposed dentine can develop sensitivity quickly, bacteria can penetrate rapidly, and additional tooth structure can fracture under biting forces. Treating it promptly is significantly easier and less expensive than treating secondary decay or fracture later.
