Act in the next 60 minutes.
A knocked-out tooth is the most time-critical dental emergency. The window for successful replantation closes rapidly — results are significantly better within 30 minutes, and possible up to 60–90 minutes if the tooth is kept correctly moist. Call 02 9221 1685 now.
Best replantation success within 60 minutes — every minute counts
can be saved.
An avulsed tooth — a tooth completely knocked out of the socket — can be replanted if you act fast and handle the tooth correctly. Success rates are significantly higher within the first 30 minutes. From 30–60 minutes, replantation is still viable but success rates decrease. Beyond 60–90 minutes, replantation becomes increasingly difficult.
How you store and handle the tooth in the interim makes all the difference. Keepingthe periodontal ligament cells alive — the fibres attached to the root — is the priority.Never clean the tooth with soap, scrub the root surface, or let it dry out. Milk is thebest storage medium if you cannot reimplant it immediately.
- Only adult teeth are replanted — Baby teeth are not replanted — contact us and we will advise on next steps for a child's avulsed tooth
- Handle by the crown only — Never touch the root surface — the periodontal ligament cells on the root are critical for replantation success
- Reimplant immediately if possible — If the socket is clean and the tooth is undamaged, gently push it back into the socket immediately
- Store in milk if not reimplanting — Milk is the best available storage medium — saline solution or the patient's own saliva under the tongue also work
- Never let it dry out — A dry tooth loses viability very quickly — do not wrap in tissue, do not clean with soap, do not rinse with tap water
Place the tooth in milk, saline, or under your tongue (carefully, so it’s not swallowed) and call 02 9221 1685 immediately while heading to our clinic. We will be ready to receive you on arrival and begin replantation immediately.

Questions we hear from patients experiencing knocked-out tooth. Call if yours isn’t here — we answer immediately.
What should I do right now if I've knocked out a tooth?
1. Pick up the tooth by the crown — never touch the root. 2. If the socket is clean, gently push the tooth back in. 3. If not, store in cold milk or keep under your tongue. 4. Call 02 9221 1685 immediately. 5. Come directly to Park House, Level 14, 187–191 Macquarie Street. Every minute matters.
Can a knocked-out baby tooth be replanted?
No — baby teeth are not replanted because replantation risks damaging the developing permanent tooth underneath. If your child has knocked out a baby tooth, call us and we will advise on management, monitoring, and follow-up. It is still important to see us to rule out other trauma.
What if the tooth cannot be replanted?
If replantation is not viable — due to extensive root damage, storage failure, or timing — the options are a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial denture. An implant is the gold standard permanent replacement. We discuss the options and begin planning at your same-day appointment.
Is replantation painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Reimplanting the tooth may feel like pressure but should not be painful during the procedure. Post-operatively, there is typically mild soreness for several days, managed with over-the-counter pain relief and careful eating.
