the adult's guide.
Both straighten teeth. Only one lets you live your life while they do it. This is the
honest, complete comparison — covering discretion, comfort, cost, clinical suitability, and how to know which one your case actually calls for.
before you decide.
Invisalign and braces both straighten teeth effectively — but the experience, lifestyle impact, and suitability vary
significantly. For adults in professional environments, the differences are particularly meaningful. This guide gives you an
honest, complete comparison.
Completely removable.
A series of custom-made clear plastic aligners that progressively move teeth into their planned positions. Worn 22 hours a day and swapped every 1–2 weeks. Removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Virtually undetectable when worn.
Clinically versatile.
Metal or ceramic brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by an archwire, which is periodically adjusted to progressively move teeth. Fixed in place for the entire treatment duration. The most clinically versatile orthodontic option for complex cases.
the honest comparison.
Porcelain veneers: ultra-thin ceramic shells bonded to the visible front surface of teeth.
Invisalign.
Invisalign’s defining advantage over braces is discretion. The aligners are virtually undetectable when worn, which makes treatment compatible with professional environments, client-facing roles, and social situations where visible braces would feel uncomfortable or inappropriate.
The removability of Invisalign aligners also means there are no food restrictions, oral hygiene is maintained exactly as normal, and there are none of the soft tissue irritations caused by brackets and wires. Most adults who complete Invisalign treatment report that the experience was far less disruptive than they anticipated.
- Virtually invisible — most people never notice
- Removable — no food restrictions, easy oral hygiene
- No brackets, wires, or metal in the mouth
- 3D simulation shows projected result before you commit
- Typically fewer and shorter appointments than braces
- Comfortable smooth plastic with no sharp edges
- Requires discipline — must be worn 22+ hours daily
- Not ideal for complex cases requiring significant rotation or vertical movement
- Lost or damaged aligners require replacement — additional cost
- Some patients have temporary lisp during initial adjustment period
- Attachments (small tooth-coloured bumps) may be visible on some cases
At Horizon Dental, every Invisalign consultation includes a 3D scan and a digital ClinCheck simulation — a before-and-after projection of your expected tooth positions. You see your result before committing to treatment.
the better choice.
Braces remain the most clinically versatile orthodontic treatment. Because the
brackets are bonded directly to the teeth and forces are applied continuously,
braces can achieve tooth movements that are currently more difficult with
removable aligners — particularly significant rotations, large vertical movements,
and complex bite corrections.
For children and teenagers, braces have the additional advantage of being non-
removable — treatment isn’t dependent on compliance. For complex adult cases
involving significant crowding, bite issues, or tooth rotations, braces may still be the
recommended clinical approach even for adult patients who would prefer
Invisalign.
- Clinically versatile — suitable for complex orthodontic cases
- Non-removable — treatment not compliance-dependent
- Effective for significant rotations and bite corrections
- Ceramic (tooth-coloured) options reduce visibility
- Often the first recommendation for complex orthodontic needs
- Visible — metal or ceramic brackets and wires
- Fixed in place — cannot remove for eating or cleaning
- Dietary restrictions — hard, sticky, chewy foods avoided
- More difficult oral hygiene — special flossing tools required
- More frequent adjustment appointments
- Potential for soft tissue irritation from brackets and wires
Horizon Dental is an Invisalign provider. If your case is best suited to traditional braces, Dr Kozor will advise this honestly at your consultation and can refer you to an appropriate orthodontist. Our priority is the right clinical recommendation for your situation, not the most convenient option for us.
Adult orthodontic treatment: discretion and lifestyle compatibility are the primary concerns for most adult patients.
the decision framework.
- You are an adult in a professional or client-facing role
- Your case involves mild to moderate crowding or spacing
- You travel frequently or have an active social schedule
- You are unwilling to restrict your diet during treatment
- You have previously had braces and teeth have shifted back
- Your case involves significant tooth rotations
- You have complex bite issues (deep overbite, crossbite)
- You are treating a child or teenager where compliance is a concern
- A specialist orthodontist has recommended braces specifically
- Cost is the primary concern and your fund covers braces better
Horizon Dental provides Invisalign. If braces are clinically appropriate, we will advise this at consultation and refer accordingly.
questions answered.
The questions we hear most often from adults comparing Invisalign and braces for the first time.
Does Invisalign work as well as braces?
For mild to moderate cases — including most adult cases — Invisalign achieves results equivalent to braces. The technology has advanced significantly; Invisalign can now treat the majority of cases that would previously have required braces. Complex cases — significant rotations, large bite corrections, severe crowding — may still be better suited to braces.
How long does Invisalign take compared to braces?
For comparable mild-moderate adult cases, treatment times are similar — typically 9–18 months for Invisalign versus 18–24 months for braces. However, Invisalign’s timeline is highly compliance-dependent: wearing aligners fewer than 22 hours a day extends treatment significantly. Braces work continuously regardless of patient behaviour.
Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?
Costs are similar for equivalent cases. Invisalign at Horizon Dental starts from $4,500 for Invisalign Lite (minor corrections) and from $6,500 for Invisalign Full. Traditional braces from specialist orthodontists typically range from $4,000–$8,000+. Health fund orthodontic rebates apply to Invisalign in the same way they apply to braces.
Does Invisalign hurt?
Invisalign causes pressure discomfort for 1–3 days each time a new aligner is fitted — teeth feel slightly tender as they adjust. This is mild and expected, and most patients manage it without pain relief. Traditional braces cause similar pressure after each adjustment, and additionally can cause soft tissue irritation from brackets and wires.
Will I need retainers after Invisalign?
Yes — retainers are essential after all orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign. Teeth have a biological tendency to drift back toward their original positions without retention. We provide retainers at the end of Invisalign treatment and advise on wearing schedule — typically full-time initially, then nights only long-term.
